Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar Review
I’ve been gettin’ my vegan grub on for over 15 years now (calm down, I’m old), and I’ve had my share of über WOW OMFG foodie moments, but this past weekend topped them all when I finally got to experience the nomnitude of Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya in S.F. Best. Meal. Evah. Their sushi was even better than LA’s Shojin (!!!), which was previously my #1 vegan restaurant & sushi spot.
Shizen’s food incorporates the finest local seasonal ingredients including soybean curd, mountain yam, and konjac – all presented in the most gorgeous, food porniest way you can imagine. Total pieces of art.
Their menu is overwhelming tantalizing, but we managed to narrow down our sushi roll selection to include these bad boys:
Proud Peacock – cucumber, avocado, shiitake, eggplant, tofu, konnyaku, kanpyo, and tobiko
Colonel’s Pipe (my second fave of the bunch) – smoked beets, cashews, cream cheese, avocado, sweet mustard, and orange zest
The Candlestick (my third fave) – cucumber, spicy tofuna, avocado, and chili tobiko
Boddy & Soul (my ultimate fave) – tempura spicy tofuna, tobiko, ito togarashi, sesame, and secret sauce.
We ordered all of this food (and some appetizers not pictured) to go, so I can’t provide much commentary on the ambiance of the restaurant itself. It looks super zen and modern from pics that I’ve seen (I stayed in the car while hubby ran in and placed our order), but I’ve heard from friends that the acoustics are a bit harsh – just a heads up.
